What makes universal baby innovative?
1. Universal BabyTM is not a punitive (“You’re doing it wrong”) or prescriptive (“Do it this way”) intervention. Rather, Universal BabyTM highlights and demonstrates how caregivers are already demonstrating elements of serve and return interaction within their cultural context. All caregivers are empowered in, quite literally, seeing their role in positively affecting a child’s brain development
2. Through the use of video, Universal BabyTM visually demonstrates the practice of serve and return interaction versus explaining it through the use of overloaded grids and wall charts or static drawings. Universal BabyTM is equally accessible to both literate and non-literate audiences
3. Because Universal BabyTM engages caregivers as the co-creators of this project, the uptake of important advances in
neurodevelopmental science and practice is increased among local social networks
4. Universal BabyTM transmits individualized videos via basic model cell phones, tablets and video screens, even in very remote areas,
making the mode of delivery easy to share and transport. Implementation of Universal BabyTM does not rely on expensive travel
budgets and training modules to roll out
5. With every caregiver and infant filmed, Universal BabyTM generates a valuable database of world-wide, open source naturalistic video
data that can help researchers and practitioners across the globe learn about cultural differences in infant childrearing and test
assumptions about early neurodevelopmental phenomena
